Current Events: Justice for Pervis Payne (By Thalia)

In 1987, Pervis Payne was convicted for "the deadly stabbing of Millington mother Charisse Christopher and her two-year-old daughter, Laci".

Payne was sentenced to the death penalty and is to be executed December 3, 2020.

Payne was not the alleged murderer. Rather, he was the one who discovered that his girlfriends neighbor, Charisse Christopher, and her children had been brutally attacked. In attempt to help, Payne got covered in blood. Once he heard the police approaching he tried to get away in fear that they would mistake him as the killer. Which is exactly what happened.

Payne, who lives with an intellectual disability, has pleaded his innocence for 33 years.

Payne's legal team has begged for a DNA test. However, The Shelby County District Attorney has opposed this. This attorney has a reputation of getting in the way of proceeding with DNA testing.

The whole case is quite shady, the district attorney continues to change their story claiming some of the "evidence that could possibly free Payne is from another case"

It is also said that the police tampered with evidence at the crime scene to make it appear as if Payne committed the crime.

These departments have painted Payne has a "violent, drugged, and aggressive black man".

(these were the big factors of his story I was interested in!)
