Writer's picture: Gen Z for JusticeGen Z for Justice

Sanou: Now this was not the first time I've been asked this

Aidon: Not the first time I’ve been asked this

Sanou: Not the first time I’ve been asked this

Aidon: It’s happened before it just makes me think about the cruel world

Sanou: Police pull us over for no reason, we plead for them to leave us alone, they force us to get out the car to put our hand behind our backs.

Aidon: Their sirens ringing in our nightmares, the people that are supposed to protect us.

Sanou: And even when we cooperate they shoot us with their eyes full of hate or make us inmates.

Aidon: Most people don't know but The imprisonment rate for African American women is twice that of white women.

Sanou: 17-year-old girl Antwon Rose, killed unarmed in her own car by police.

Aidon: 12-year-old Tamir Rice killed without a chance to even say a word.

Sanou: Me, now as a kid fear some police because of the way they treat me and my people just because of our skin color.

Aidon: Fine, take away what we know

Sanou: what we see,

Aidon: what we do

Sanou: and what we can be

Sanou, Aidon: But you’ll never change who we are.
